MSO, PCASP, APPN, AEPPN, WHAT ARE THEY?

Many of you are wondering about the ship protection business and its many acronyms. Let's try to shed some light on the subject. MSO is the trade name for what is known as PCASP. The name PCASP follows an IMO recommendation on the use of armed guards on board ships. The IMO recommends that armed guards should have 3 qualifications, although this is not compulsory for flags:
  • SSO (Ship Security Officer),
  • MFCC (Maritime Firearms Competency Certificate)
  • CFBS (Certificate of basic safety training) , also known as BST (Basic Safety Training).

The PCASP is only a recommendation from the IMO, although some flags may require it. Recognition of your qualifications depends on the recognition of the training organization you have chosen, and on the willingness and requirements of the flag. Always check that the training organization and its accreditations are recognized by the authorities of the flag you are going to work for.

As an MSO, you're dealing with a highly complex area of international law, and in my experience, I can only advise you against going down this route, now that France has turned its attention to the subject...
AEPPN stands for Private Ship Protection Company Agent. APPN is a misnomer, because you are not a private agent, but an agent of a private company, which is not the same thing.

AEPPNs work for EPPN (Private Ship Protection Company), most often, but not exclusively, under the French flag.
The position of AEPPN is governed by the Internal Security Code (CSI) and the Code des Transports (CDT), and after training and investigation, you can obtain a professional card issued by the CNAPS. This card will not only enable you to work under the French flag, but will also give you the legitimacy to work under any flag, as French training is recognized as high quality by both French and foreign EPPNs.

The AEPPN therefore has a professional card, whereas the MSO does not.
AEPPN training is regulated. There's no need to go overboard. Strict compliance with this decree will enable you to obtain your AEPPN card.
SURTYMAR FORMATION is a guarantee of compliance with the decree, no more, no less; it's a partnership with EPPNs who are looking for AEPPNs to become or already hold a professional card. It's a guarantee of support throughout the process, from registration to obtaining your AEPPN card.

This demonstration, which is intended to be concise, may lack detail, but is only intended to "rough out" the subject and provide a general introduction for those interested.
